Child of Ul'dah

TW: Violence, bloodFor as long as Emile Tiveux could remember, they were alone. An orphan of the streets in Ul'dah like so many others. No rules, no one to care, no one to look to for guidance. They had to learn quick how to survive off of wit and schemes. They were a leader of sorts in one group of orphans, devising plans to try and scrounge up as much gil as they could to eat. Stealing, scamming, bribing, you name it. Emile was willing to do anything for their survival. With age, that determination only grew. By the age of 17, Emile was taught about the Twelve by a priestess of the city who took Emile under her wing, teaching them specifically about Ul'dah's patron deity: Nald'thal. From the first teaching Emile instantly took hold to the Traders, keepers of life, death, and wealth. The priestess, a kindly older Lalafell woman named Fafashi, did not agree with how other figures of faith taught the word of Nald'thal, how they used donations as a way to scare the people into giving them plenty if they wanted to be presented well on the Traders' scales after death. Instead she taught Emile that it's how one uses their wealth that will be judged. If they used it selfishly or for good.Emile never forgot those teachings, even after Fafashi passed two years after their first meeting. They would watch the richest of the city, especially the Syndicate, and know that even if they were the richest in all of Thanalan, they would suffer the wrath of Thal. "One day," Emile would always think to themselves. "In time, fate will favor me."They knew what they needed to do. Riches was in their sight, as it had ever been, but now a plan was in motion. Emile believes firmly they do not need anyone, people only weighed them down. This they had to do alone. Amass plentiful wealth and use it to make sure no child went starving wherever they traveled. Especially in the streets of Ul'dah. Being so set on gil many see Emile as selfish and money hungry, the other homeless would talk behind their back as they walked along Pearl Lane. One day, words turned to actions. That night had been so cold one could see their own breath dance on the wind. Emile had just finished stealing a innocent traveler's gil pouch while distracting him with a card trick. Oldest trick in the book, yet he had been none the wiser. Emile walked down the Lane to where their corner of the street was, where a crate was that they so often over the years leaned against to sleep while sitting up, right next to a lamp that illuminated the small corner. Yet they were stopped by a Hyur man who occupated the same street, drunk and angry. Shouting at Emile, claiming them as a traitor who only looked out of themselves, someone who would so easily step on their fellow man to climb to the top. Of course, Emile knew this not to be true, they never forsook anyone else on the street for coin, only those more fortunate than the rest of them. This irritated them beyond belief, they were never a patient person and the chilling bite of the air was not helping that fact. But before Emile could even open their mouth, the Hyur pulled a dagger out from his side and slashed them deep across the face, narrowly missing an eye. Emile yelled out in pain and caused the rest of the poor souls on the street to watch now as they hunched over and brought a hand up to their face, it quickly becoming drenched with blood.Slowly, they raised their head up. The sight was enough to put any grown man into a shock. Emile's eyes were wide, wild, filled with a rage no one had ever seen in them before. Blood streaked down their face from the gushing wound, some dripping off of their chin and onto the cracked stone street below. For a few moments, Emile was gone. This was more akin to a wild animal than a person. That animal lashed out, tooth and claw, as they pulled out their own dagger from a sheath strapped to their leg and plunged it into the man's stomach, twisting deep. It was almost as if Emile blacked out for it all, because when they came to their senses enough to calm the rage, the man who had cut him was now laying on the ground, bleeding out with a small crowd of the people in the street staring in shock and fear. Emile knew their situation was not good, and that they needed to leave before the Flames showed up. So they ran. They ran and hid with the aid of an acquaintance from the inn, Momodi Modi, who would let Emile bathe in one of the rooms every week in exchange for a few chores being done for her. They knew they would be safe there.Emile waited for a few days in an inn room, spending the whole duration of their stay not sleeping and forcing themselves to calm down. Build a higher wall. Pretend they didn't murder a man in cold bold. It had been in self defense... It was self defense, wasn't it? They didn't know what to think. All they knew is when they returned to Pearl Lane, no one rushed to arrest them, and no one dared meet their gaze. No one who witnessed what happened told the truth of what they saw out of fear. They feared they would be next. Emile didn't dare approach anyone after that, and no one dared to approach them either. They were 21 when it happened. Soon after, the Seventh Umbral Calamity struck. The Calamity worsened the state of the poor in Ul'dah, and Emile was finding it very difficult to keep a steady head. All they did was pray and pray for some miracle. For five long years they prayed and continued to do anything it took to survive another day. And yet when they were beginning to lose all hope, they got swept up in the city's affairs after taking an adventuring job, looking into a conspiracy and thieves of the crown. Before they knew it they were claimed as the champion to the Sultana's crown, and declared as Ul'dah's envoy. It all happened so fast. However, Emile took this as a sign from Nald'thal himself. This was their moment. Their chance to make their dreams come true. The chance to make it big and truly show the world what wealth meant. For Nald'thal. For Fafashi. These were dreams that had felt so distant for so long. Twelve be damned if Emile was going to toss this opportunity aside.
